By AP News | October 10, 2018 09:10:50New information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that some of the new Zika-linked vaginal health and skin care products sold in the U.S. may have been contaminated with the Zika virus.
The CDC says that a number of health products marketed as being free of the Zika Virus are linked to an outbreak in Puerto Rico, Puerto Rico has confirmed cases of Zika-like symptoms in its territories and Puerto Rico says that two of its hospitals may be infected with the virus.
In a statement to ABC News, the CDC said the products were manufactured in Puerto Rican facilities and sold in stores across the U, and that tests confirmed traces of the virus in some samples.
The agency said the samples were sent to the CDC for testing and that the samples are being tested for other Zika-associated viruses.
Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rosselló said Tuesday that health care workers have been infected by Zika-related virus, which is known as ZIKV, in Puerto Ricans hospitals and clinics.
Rosselló also said Puerto Rico’s Health Ministry has confirmed at least 11 cases of ZIKv infections in Puerto Rica, including five in the hospital.
He said the health ministry has launched a vaccine program to protect health care staff and residents.
The outbreak in the United States is the first of its kind to be confirmed in Puerto ricos territory, and the first in the continental U.P. in nearly a decade.
The United States has confirmed 464 cases of the mosquito-borne virus since the virus was first identified in April.
That number is higher than the previous record of 404.
On Tuesday, Puerto Ricos Health Minister Ricardo Lopez-Canel announced the state would issue a Zika emergency declaration that would include the island’s territory and all U.s. territories, Puerto Rican President Sergio Padilla said.
“We are announcing that we will issue an emergency declaration for the whole United States and the Us.
Virgin Islands,” Padilla told reporters.
Padilla said the declaration would allow Puerto Ricias people to return to the island and help spread the virus to people in the affected regions.
