Lipitor Versus Grapefruit

Lipitor is a statin drug that is manufactured by pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and used to control high cholesterol levels. By lowering cholesterol, the drug aims to prevent dangerous blockages in blood flow and thereby reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. However, some studies now connect the drug to serious side effects like type 2 diabetes.

But we are not going to discuss that here. What is of concern in this article is that it is clearly stated on the product not to consume grapefruit if you are taking Lipitor… and why is that?

When grapefruit juice is consumed, it’s metabolized by certain enzymes in the liver — the same enzymes that break down Lipitor in your body. Essentially, if the enzymes are too busy metabolizing the grapefruit juice, then the medication can’t be broken down, which results in an overabundance of it in your system, and that can lead to some even more serious side effects which you may read about here.

So wouldn’t that mean that by regularly consuming grapefruit, you may actually lower your cholesterol and not actually need Lipitor in the first place? Well the answer to that is a resounding YES!!!

A grapefruit a day — particularly the red variety — can help keep heart disease at bay, according to a new study by Israeli researchers. In a controlled study group of patients with heart disease, the scientists found that feeding some patients the equivalent of one grapefruit daily significantly reduced levels of cholesterol in comparison to patients that did not eat grapefruit.

Chronic high blood cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease, and when choosing to regulate your health it is advised to look at the natural alternatives first… such as whole foods, and in this case our beloved grapefruit to lower cholesterol 🙂 Don Tollman states that it takes around 60 days of consistent use to reach maximum efficacy.

Nature when consumed as intended… rarely, if ever has any side effects… look to nature and she will look after you… unless of course you feel pharmaceuticals and their side effects are your ideal health path. Wherever you are on your journey it would be fair to say that minor and cumulative lifestyle changes will only do you a world of good, it could be as simple as starting to drink a glass of grapefruit juice every morning… and then even progress to living on a 100% plant based diet for optimum health and wellness… either way have a great day and consider your options when it comes to lowering your cholesterol! Ultimately it’s your body and your health, so choose wisely.
